Jesus Place Inner City Mission Atlanta, Georgia |
Because of the need of the people on the streets of downtown Atlanta, Jesus Place Inner City Mission (known as "Jesus Place of Peace") was begun in 1969. In 1974 Jim Vernon became the first fulltime worker for the mission. His program of ministry included Bible studies and meals several evenings a week, outdoor Vacation Bible Schools, distributing gospel tracts, Bible correspondence and Bible literacy courses.
In 1986 the Longley Ave. Christian Church made their building available for use by Jesus Place. Soon homeless men from the area began attending the weekly worship services.
With the help of summer interns, Vacation Bible Schools take place each summer, some "on the streets" of Atlanta, in parks or at housing projects. As a result of these contacts an after-school program is now held at Hillcrest twice a week, featuring outdoor activities, refreshments, help with homework and Bible lessons. College young people help with this program. On Wednesdays John, Paula and Brandon take several children to the mid-week service at Ben Hill Church and assist in teaching classes there. On Thursday evenings teenagers are taken to the Lester Road Church youth program, which involves Cambodian, Vietnamese, Laotian, black and white young people.
In addition to helping to feed and clothe homeless people in Atlanta, Jesus Place also feeds their souls. Every Lord's Day morning there is Bible study and worship at the Longley Ave. building with 50 - 120 homeless attending. During the past six years 106 were baptized into Christ and 158 came to repent and renew their faith.
After attending the service, worshippers are offered clothing, food, toiletries, shoes and a Bible. Local churches help in this ministry by providing volunteers to assist with the food and clothing distribution. Members of our congregation volunteer to help in this program on the fourth Sunday of every month. This is an area in which you can become a vital part of our mission activities.
